President Xi Jinping Meets with Malaysian Former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad

On 5 October 2013, President Xi Jinping met in Kuala Lumpur with Malaysian former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad.

Xi Jinping appreciated Mahathir Mohamad for making important contributions to promoting China-Malaysia friendly cooperation over the years and for being an old friend respected by the Chinese people. Xi Jinping expressed that 600-plus years ago, the Chinese navigator Zheng He visited Malacca five times during his seven naval expeditions. It has become a much-told story in the history of friendly exchanges between the two countries. Reviewing the past, China will unswervingly follow the path of peaceful development, cement peaceful relations by upholding good faith and be committed to developing good-neighbourly and friendly relations with Malaysia. The Chinese people are striving to realize the goal of "Two 100 Years", while Malaysia is moving towards the goal of "Vision 2020". The two countries share extensive common interests and similar development process with broad prospects for mutually beneficial cooperation. During the visit, I have keenly felt the strong aspiration of all social sectors in Malaysia for developing cooperation with China. China actively supports all social sectors of the two countries for strengthening exchanges and cooperation.

Mahathir Mohamad expressed that 600-plus years ago, Zheng He led a powerful fleet to Malaysia bringing with him nothing but friendship. The Malaysian people appreciate China's peaceful development and the policy of good-neighbourly friendship. We are optimistic about the prospects of China's economic growth. It is believed that the Chinese people will undoubtedly be able to realize the goal of the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation. The Malaysian side looks forward to developing strong comprehensive strategic partnership with China to benefit from each other's development. Mahathir Mohamad as well raised proposals on bilateral practical cooperation, expressing that the Malaysian business community is preparing for the establishment of "Zheng He Association", which is aimed to promote bilateral trade and mutual investment. He expressed tha he will continue to be dedicated to boosting the development of Malaysia-China relations.

Wang Huning, Li Zhanshu, Yang Jiechi and others were present at the meeting.
