BEIJING, Dec. 30 (Xinhuanet) -- China appreciated the Japanese government's statement on the Taiwan issue, said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Jianchao here Tuesday.

The Japanese government stated Monday it hoped Taiwan's leader Chen Shui-bian would abide by his promises not to declare Taiwan independence, nor to incorporate the "two states" remarks into its constitution, nor change of the so-called country's name, nor call a referendum on independence during his tenure as leader.

The Japanese government also hoped Chen would remain cautious on the issues of the referendum and making a new "constitution".

Liu said the statement was "positive", adding, "We appreciate this statement."

China hoped Japan would cautiously handle the Taiwan issue, and take more action conducive to China's reunification and the stability and development of Sino-Japanese ties. Enditem
