Remarks by the Spokesperson of the Chinese Embassy in Cairo on the Situation in Hong Kong

I. Demonstrations in Hong Kong are not only serious crimes of violence, but showed a tendency of resorting to terrorism.

Demonstrations in Hong Kong have recently taken a violent turn as some radical mobsters deliberately perpetuated violence. Their behavior has nothing to do with peaceful demonstration. They stormed and vandalized the Legislative Council and the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Hong Kong SAR, disfigured and drowned the Chinese national flag and emblem, smashed public facilities, paralyzed the airport, obstructed public transport, and brazenly attacked police officers in extremely dangerous and cruel ways, including using lethal weapons like smoke bombs, petrol bombs, and large caliber shooting devices, and even aggravated assault journalists. These are not only serious crimes of violence, but showed a tendency of resorting to terrorism. Their violence tramples the rule of law and public order in Hong Kong, threatens the life and property of Hong Kong citizens, and challenges Hong Kong's prosperity and stability and the principle of "one country, two systems". This is not tolerable for any responsible government and will only be met with a firm hand in accordance with the law.

II. "One Country, Two Systems" brings Hong kong unprecedented rights and freedoms

Since the return of Hong Kong 22 years ago, the principle of "One Country, Two Systems", "the people of Hong Kong governing Hong Kong" and a high degree of autonomy in the SAR have been faithfully implemented. Our Hong Kong compatriots are now their own masters with unprecedented rights and freedoms in accordance with law. Hong Kong ranked the 16th for its rule of law in 2018 - higher than that of the US - while it ranked below 60th in 1996.

III. US's undeniable involvement in the on-going violent incidents in Hong Kong

On August 12, US House Speaker Pelosi, Senator McConnell, Senator Rubio and Congressman Yoho tweeted that Hong Kong police repressed demonstrators with violence and that the Chinese central government eroded democracy and freedom in Hong Kong. The US denied on many occasions its involvement in the on-going violent incidents in Hong Kong. However, the comments from those members of the US congress have provided the world with new and powerful evidence on the country's involvement. Hong Kong is part of China, and its affairs are completely China's domestic affairs, which allow no interference by any foreign country, organization or individual in any form. No one should ever underestimate China's determination to uphold national sovereignty and security and Hong Kong's prosperity and stability, or expect China to yield to the intimidation and pressure from foreign interfering forces. We strongly urge the American politicians to abide by international law and basic norms governing international relations, and respect the just aspiration of the majority of Hong Kong citizens to oppose violence, uphold the rule of law and support the police. We urge them to immediately make a clean break from the violent extremists, and stop meddling with Hong Kong affairs, which are China's domestic affairs.

IV. Some US politician neglect and distort the truth

By neglecting and distorting the truth, they whitewashed violent crimes as a struggle for human rights and freedom, and deliberately misinterpreted the work of Hong Kong police as violent repression when the police were only enforcing the law, fighting crimes and upholding social order. While showing no mercy towards those who assault police at home, the US selectively turns a blind eye when it comes to Hong Kong, painting instead the Hong Kong police's efforts to enforce the law in a civilized manner despite malicious attacks and humiliation as a "crackdown" on peaceful protests. It only fully reveals the entrenched prejudice, hypocrisy, indifference, selfishness and hegemonic thinking of some American politicians.
